“Well, the first thing is, we’re short, time-wise,” Morgan said, looking up from his notes. “Dumping three routines really hurt us. The Linking Rings got us half that time back, but we’re still seriously short.”

I nodded. “I know, but I have a plan for that,” I said as I pulled at my bow tie, hoping to release it in the finest James Bondian fashion. Sadly the knot wasn’t in on this plan, and so what had begun as a cool guy move ended with my tugging ineffectually at the tie until I finally gave up.

I was leaning against the edge of the stage. Morgan was sitting in the front row and Nimisha had pulled a chair onto the platform, where she was sitting, sipping from a bottle of water.

“And management is not going to be wild about not using three key props--Levitation, Zig Zag, and Origami,” he said with a pained look. “You know how Morty gets.”

“Hey, he said all the props have to appear on stage. We met that standard: All the props appeared on the stage. He never said how long they needed to be there,” I said.

I was still catching my breath from the run but was also feeling the adrenalin of having hit the timing just right. “I believe we’ve achieved the spirit, if not the letter, of his law. Plus, I’m convinced when we actually do it for a real audience, Nimisha’s rejection of the props will get us some nice laughs.”

“I like the way you think,” Morgan said with a grin. “It’s somehow sneaky and above-board, both at the same time.” He consulted his notes, and then looked over at Nimisha. “That’s it for me. Have you got anything?”

She looked up as if surprised to be addressed. “Me?”

Morgan nodded. “You typically have notes and comments at this point in the process. At least, traditionally.”

“Oh yeah, sure,” she said, giving her head a slight shake and sitting up straighter in her chair. “Um, obviously there was an issue...” Her voice trailed off.

Morgan and I exchanged a look.

“That is to say,” she continued and then stopped. I leaned forward, encouragingly.

“Oh, who cares, I got to do my Rings routine, the rest is nonsense,” she said, breaking into a wide grin. “But how can we possibly use it in the show?”

“Well, the way I look at it,” I said, moving closer to the two of them, “as long as we use all the props, have a magician in a tux, feature the Floating Light Bulb and get it all done in exactly twenty-two-and-a-half minutes, we’re golden.”

“That’s all well and good, but this new line-up puts us several minutes short of twenty-two-and-a-half minutes,” Morgan repeated, almost whining.

“That won’t be the case if I can re-tool the Floating Light Bulb to be closer to Blackstone’s original presentation,” I said. “But I can’t do it alone.” I looked at one, then the other. “Who’s with me?”

“I’m in,” Morgan said without hesitation.

We both turned to Nimisha. She was studying one of the many rings on her fingers very intently.
